William, Harry and Kate at the Sugar Hut, Fulham, Easter 2005
Fulham, London · March 2005
I am Charles Pycraft, a London photographer.
In a GQ interview published this week, Prince Harry said of his family, "I want it to work out" (ABC News). So here is a lighter moment from my archive: the brothers out together in London, 21 years ago.
The Sugar Hut, Easter Monday 2005
My camera has them at the Sugar Hut in Fulham on the evening of Easter Monday, 28 March 2005. The Evening Standard reported at the time that the princes were out with a group of friends, and that Kate Middleton, who was studying with William at St Andrews, left about ten minutes after them (Evening Standard).
Harry, then 20, comes out in a grey jumper and khaki trousers with something white in his hand. William, 22, wears a maroon, white and pale blue striped rugby shirt, with a jacket slung over his arm. Kate, 23, steps through the big wooden door in a pink top and flared jeans. It looks like a very ordinary Bank Holiday night out, which is rather the charm of it.
That week
London had a new favourite Saturday night show. Two days earlier, on 26 March, Doctor Who returned to BBC One after 16 years, with Christopher Eccleston as the Doctor and Billie Piper as Rose, and around 10 million people tuned in (BBC). The number 1 single that week was the Comic Relief release of (Is This the Way to) Amarillo by Tony Christie featuring Peter Kay, which stayed at the top for seven weeks (Official Charts).
Where they are now
William and Kate married in 2011 and are now the Prince and Princess of Wales. Harry moved back to the UK with his family in August, and this week's interview has a hopeful note to it.
My photography years ran from 1999 to 2014, and that archive is now licensed through Backgrid UK.
The pictures
Five frames from a body of work I made in London between 1999 and 2014, all from the same evening at the Sugar Hut. Where people who are not public figures appear in the background, they have been blurred.
